Paul Edward Muego (Philippines), who was there together with Iulia Picu (Romania), sent the following report about his experience:

"Got home Sunday evening; it was a long way (a total of more than 24 hours of flight time!). But then well and good; my wife and daughter picked me up at the airport.

the whole IEPC went well in terms of sharing and listening to the different experiences of churches and organizations in terms of peacebuilding work. These came out during the plenaries as well as the reasoning workshops. Documenting all the learning that came out in the workshops and even in the buzz groups duing plenaries is a big challenge. The IEPC could certainly have done more in this regard.

But of course in the context of the Decade to Overcome Violence, we still have a very long collective journey ahead of us. Using the TIDES as a model to look at the situation of the different churches and their myriad of initiatives, a lot of work still needs to be done. This was very evident, for example, when the IEPC statement was being discussed.

The DPC (the tools, the models) provided me with a very good framework to analyze the different initiatives as presented in the different workshops and plenaries that I participated in. For me, this shows the practical usefullness of the work that we do (the DPC)--from the micro to the macro level.

As for the DPC workshop, we didn't have the number that we expected before the IEPC started. Coming from a participant-perspective, I myself would have chosen to go to different workshops rather than stay on the same workshop stretched out in 4 days. And of course, the presence of the two "Germans" would have helped a lot in terms of promoting the workshop.

Of particular interest for me as well was the participation of a good number of people from EDAN (Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network). I attended most of their workshops. Using the FEARS, the disability sector in general are regarded as the "losers". Their struggle for inclusion within the ecumenical world, which they say formally started in Harare, still has a long way to go as well.

All in all it was a very good experience. It was great working with Iulia. We both had fun preparing for and facilitating the workshops. As well as a lot of reflections and insights shared in between sessions and plenaries.

Am very thankful, blessed, and honored to have participated in the IEPC. I say it was well all the effort and all."

Paul's pictures on Facebook

paulenmuego@yahoo.com

Upcoming DPC trainings in the Netherlands and in No. Ireland

In the last months of 201, two additional DPC- trainings are planned.

1. From 22 - 26 October a Training of Facilitators is planned in the Netherlands. This award distinguishes the Youth Intervention Network as a national best practice in developing effective community collaborations addressing the problem of youth violence while successfully recruiting, training and mobilizing community volunteers. Noteworthy elements of the Youth Intervention Network are:

The High Performing Community Collaboration framework - as developed by Emerald Consulting.

At risk indicators identified through individual analysis of more than 8,000 youth with legal safeguards to protect privacy.

The involvement of a high number of volunteers who do the actual support-work for the kids and their families. At present more than 100 volunteers have invested more than 20,000 volunteer hours, and completed approximately 100 hours of training each.

The application of "Dialogue for Peaceful Change" (DPC) as the so called 'software' of the system to enhance effective cooperation between involved agencies as well as the quality of the interventions, made by the volunteers in different roles.

As an effect of this award, a number of new communities showed a strong wish to have this approach replicated in their communities as well. Meetings with officials from the US government are supporting the idea that more cities in the USA can apply this approach. In the meanwhile it is also important to enlarge the group of involved people in Antioch itself. When Antioch can be sustained, the enlargement is possible. We are working on that!
Iris Archuleta, Jaap van der Sar
For more information: jvdsar@stichtingoikos.nl

DPC leaflet 2010

Dialogue for Peaceful Change flyer 2010 -

DPC successfully applied in Antioch

Youth violence, low test scores and grades, truancy, gang affiliation and disconnection from family and school are words with a meaning in many cities and places throughout the world. In Antioch, CA, police chief Jim Hyde and Iris Archuleta, Co-founder of Emerald Consulting decided not to just complain about the problem. Instead, they started the Youth Intervention Network. With the help of many professionals and - more important - volunteers, they utilized Emerald Consulting’s High Performing Community (HPC)- model as a positive response to the developments in their city. Through the application of DPC they were able to generate enthusiasm for a hands-on approach of the challenges.

DPC was used in at least four ways. First it appeared a very useful tool for the improvement of the cooperation between the many agencies at play. Second it is the basic approach for all volunteers in their contacts with the children as well as with their parents. Volunteers meet with parents and youth who have agreed to cooperate with the process of using mediation as a substitute for more traditional assessment tools. Volunteers get a very intense support and training before they are allowed to engage youth and families, and they continue to receive support. Third DPC created a common language and approach for many people in schools, in police-service, in social work, and in policy-making bodies. Fourth - not amazing for many who already followed a DPC-training - it had an impact on the facilitators in their personal lives. The feed back after the trainings and also after many meetings where DPC was applied, is still: ”It is life changing.“

In Antioch it also appears to be life-saving. Quite some other places want to learn from the experiences, knowing that it can't be a quick solution for an already long lasting problem. However, HPC combined with DPC appears to be a hopeful sign for a systemic change, not just regarding youth and youth violence. That would be too easy and tends to makes youth a convenient scapegoat. This approach changes the whole community and makes life better for all its stakeholders.

For more information please contact
Iris Archuleta, JD
Co-Founder, Emerald Consulting
Co-Chair, The Youth Intervention Network
iris@emeraldconsulting.com
+ 1 925-755-9291
www.emeraldconsulting.com

Faclitators, trainers and coaches for DPC

At present nearly 450 persons have been certified after their participation in the DPC-Training of Facilitators. Participants of the 33 trainings so far came from very many different countries, from all continents - where just one came from Australia. The trainings have been given in 12 different countries.

As part of the trainings, which were offered, a "foundational course" was given, where the full mediation training wasn't part of the program. Due to reasons for time or participants, the program was changed into a training where the tools were applied in the way organisations can cooperate more productively. Most of the time this dealt with mechanisms to really validate the interdependence between groups and organisations.

This was also the entry-point for the many trainings in the place where most facilitators were trained: Antioch, CA in the USA - about 115 facilitators in this town and far more to come. As a result of these adopted trainings we now have 86 people who have been taught the DPC-cooperation skills and attitudes.

In the beginning of DPC we started with very few people, who were able to train. Now we have 12 associate trainers, 12 certified trainers and 5 certified trainers who also act as a coach for the associate trainers.

Most important however is the fact that facilitators report about the way they apply their learnings through DPC in daily life. It's life-changing and encouraging.

Jaap van der Sar
DPC-project-coordinator at Oikos

First DPC-training in the Netherlands

Although the DPC-project started in the Netherlands with a conference, a DPC-training wasn't scheduled in this country yet. Two ladies from Cameroon were emphatic and made it my farewell message that I should arrange a DPC workshop for francophone Africa. I spoke to the Francophone representative, Dr Pascal Foussou, who was excited about the idea. In a nutshell life in Africa is bridled with types of conflict that can have social disruption on unwanted scale. So DPC training with its emphasis on mediative skills is appropriate. With Africa we have to widen the part of mediative behaviour because of the latent conflicts that are on the rise regarding different enthnic communities" <div style="text-align: right; This is the result of the training of DPC facilitators, held at the Christian Study Centre in Rawalpindi, Pakistan from 12 - 17 July 2008. Participants came from different organisations from all over the country, as well as from different religious communities - Muslim and Christian. At the beginning of the training the question was raised whether DPC-methodology is applicable in the Pakistani context. The conclusion at the end of the training was: Very much so. Participants recognised that DPC offers a methodology which can be easily applied in families, in organisations as well as in relationships between groups that have conflicting views, or in the prevention stages of conflicts. DPC helps preventing to go to violent stages - that was one of the key learnings that participants took home.
Jaap van der Sar

Conflict and cooperation

Recently two trainings have been given in the USA. The main focus was how to improve the way different organisations, all focused at the youth within a certain area of San Fransisco, can cooperate effectively. As in all forms of cooperation, it can be expected that tensions will arise. How to handle them? This was subject of the DPC-training, knowing that it is far better to be prepared than to be surprised.

This modification of the Training of Facilitators adds to the possibilities to apply DPC.
The same subject is now discussed in a small project in the Netherlands, where we look for possibilities to apply DPC in the diversity-discussion. Dialogue for Peaceful Change is a methodology used globally, that creates a setting and provides a pathway for overcoming division. DPC is not the goal but the instrument in a process which seeks to build the creative and practical skills of peaceful change. It’s about facilitating the road to solutions found and agreed by the people caught in negative conflict patterns. I have taken this training and highly recommend it. Contact Paul Campbell if you are interested.
Interesting research? Cooperation, punishment and revenge

"Research from The University of Nottingham has shed new light on the way in which people co-operate for the common good — and what happens when they don’t.

In a new international study of 16 countries, published in the prestigious journal Science, economists studied the extent to which some people will sacrifice personal gain to benefit the wider public, while ‘freeloaders’ try to take advantage of their generosity.

Marked national differences arose when freeloaders were punished for putting their own interests ahead of the common good. And whether they accepted their punishment or retaliated in kind depended on what kind of society they lived in, the researchers found.

In countries like the USA, Switzerland and the UK, freeloaders accepted their punishment and became much more co-operative. But in countries based on more authoritarian and parochial social institutions such as Oman, Saudi Arabia, Greece and Russia, the freeloaders took revenge — retaliating against those who had punished them.

Co-operation for the common good plummeted as a result.

In societies where the modern ethic of co-operation with unrelated strangers is less familiar and the rule of law is perceived to be weak, revenge is more common and co-operation suffers, the study found.

Economists are keen to understand the decision-making processes behind co-operation, as working together for the common good is crucial for progress in any society — not least for effectively addressing big issues such as recycling and tackling climate change.

Professor Simon Gaechter and Dr Benedikt Herrmann at The University of Nottingham and Dr Christian Thoni at the University of St Gallen, Switzerland, studied the behaviour of people in 16 cities around the world, from Boston and Bonn to Riyadh, Minsk, Nottingham, Seoul and others. Volunteers played a ‘public goods’ game in which they were given tokens and told they could either keep them all for themselves, or put it into a common ‘pot’ that would yield extra interest that would be shared out equally among all players.

If all volunteers pooled their money then all would come out with more at the end of the game. But if individuals chose to keep the money for themselves — and not contribute anything — they could keep all of it and also benefit from the generosity of others, by sharing in the pooled interest.

Levels of co-operation were remarkably similar across all 16 nations. However, behaviour changed dramatically when everyone’s contributions were revealed — and players were given the ability to ‘punish’ other players. Players could punish each other by taking tokens away from each other, although this option cost the punisher a token as well. As previous studies have shown, players were willing to part with a token of their own in order to punish low investors or freeloaders.

But the Science study also uncovered a new phenomenon. In subsequent rounds of the game, the freeloaders took revenge and hit back at their higher-paying counterparts in what is described as ‘anti-social punishment’. Or at least, they did in some cities — most notably in more traditional societies based on authoritarian and parochial social institutions such as Muscat in Oman, Athens, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, Samara in Russia, Minsk in Belarus, Istanbul, Seoul and Dnipropetrovsk in Ukraine. A mixture of highly and less experienced participants in combination with the Nova Scotian setting created the atmosphere for an inspiring week. All participants recognized the surplus value of the DPC tool and illustrated this value by sharing their new insights in experiences and struggles in their work in situations of change and conflict. The combination of these stories and the new tools were the ingredients of a successful training in which every participant had their own valuable contribution. DPC thanks the Tatamagouche Center for the opportunity and support.

Three DPC-trainings in the European region!

No changes without tensions
Looking for a better world requires important changes
Conflicts are natural - violence is not.
These are some of the learning's you get during the training in 'mediative dialogue'. This training, under the heading of the program "Dialogue for Peaceful Change" (DPC) has been developed in recent years. In 2007 three trainings will be given in Europe.

What is DPC?
DPC is an ecumenical project, dealing with a systematic approach of conflicts. As a result of the ongoing development in this project, we now have a Training of Facilitators (ToF) as well as a Training of Trainers (ToT). In the ToF we offer an intense and very practical training for people which normally have to deal with changes in their work or lives. Changes are always related to a certain level of conflict. The changes occur in personal lives as well in professional circumstances. DPC offers ways to deal with these changes and conflicts in a very adequate way. The ToF is a training during five full days, guided by two experienced trainers for a group of max. 16 participants.

Three Trainings of Facilitators
We are happy to invite you for one of the following three DPC-trainings for facilitators:
· 3 September - 9 September 2007: Corrymeela, Ballycastle, No. Ireland. Corrymeela has quite a reputation in dealing with conflicts. It has developed it's experience and competence during the struggle within Northern Ireland in the last decades. Corrymeela is an ecumenical centre of reconciliation for local, national and international groups. The training will be given by Mrs. Rachel Craig, working at Corrymeela and dealing with conflicts in the family- and community-level of the No. Irish society, and Mrs. Ingeberte Uitslag, working at Stichting Oikos, the Netherlands. She applies the methodology in her work as neighbourhood-counselling as well as in her work regarding development aid and the public awareness in that field. Ingeberte is a member of the DPC-Coordination team.

Participation in this training costs € 475 - the most expensive one of the three. The advantage for several people will be: lower travel costs to No. Ireland. For further information as well as for application for this training - please contact Mr. David Price at Corrymeela (tel. + 44 28 20762626, david.price@corrymeela.org).

· 30 September - 6 October 2007: Home of Hope, Brasov, Romania. Home of Hope has a history of more than 15 years and deals with questions in society. It's a protestant centre with open eyes for processes in society as a whole. Heavy changes have occurred and will occur in this country. Home of Hope participates and reflects on it as well. That's why the centre is well equipped to host a ToF for people from Romania as well as from foreign countries. The training will be given, again, by two trainers. The first is Mr. Colin Craig, director of Tides Training in No. Ireland. He has a long experience in dealing with trainings regarding conflicts. He got his experience, among others, during his work as director of Corrymeela. Colin is also member of the DPC-Coordination team. The second trainer isn't appointed yet.

Participation in this training costs € 275; the travel costs have to be paid by participants themselves. For further information as well as for application for this training, please contact Mrs. Kate Zoltani, (tel. +40 (268) 421244, zoltanikatalin@yahoo.com).

· 4 November - 10 November 2007: Valamo Lay Academy, Valomo, Finland. Valamo Lay Academy is an orthodox centre, which deals with questions and challenges within and outside the Orthodox Church of Finland. The Orthodox Church faces changes in society as well in the church itself. How to deal with them in a proper way, avoiding too heavy conflicts? This is one of the reasons to have a ToF in this centre. The training will be given by Mrs. Liza Kelly, working at Tides Training in No. Ireland, and Mr. Jaap van der Sar, working at Stichting Oikos, the Netherlands. Liza Kelly applies the DPC-methodology in her daily work as trainer and/or mediator, dealing with different target groups in No. Ireland, like the police, civil servants. Jaap van der Sar is one of the founders of the DP-project. He applies the methods in his work, for instance in real conflicts as well as in cooperation between about 50 NGO's in the Netherlands. He is also member of the DPC-Coordination team.

Participation in this training costs € 275; the travel costs have to be paid by participants themselves. For further information as well as for application for this training, please contact Mrs. Sirpa Koriala (tel. +358-50-5660809, sirpa.koriala@valamo.fi).

The prices of the training include board and lodging as well as the Hand-Out-Book for each trainee.
